WHAT IS THE FIRST DOCUMENT YOU NEED TO FILL OUT?
Many people ask the question, “where do I start when I want to get a divorce?” the answer generally is you need to file a Petition for Dissolution, which in layman’s terms translates to, “I am Requesting A Divorce.”
The Petition for Dissolution will ask you a number of questions on it like:
- What year and date did you get married?
- What year and date did you separate?
- Do you have children?
- Do you have assets?
- Do you have assets that belong to you and should not be shared with your spouse?
- What do you think child custody should be like?
- And more.
PLEASE NOTE:
The Petition can be found online or at your local courthouse, along with the other local papers, you will need to fill out! Before filling a Petition out you should suggest paying for an hour of an attorney’s time, or seeking help at a low-income self-help center if you qualify. Remember, anything you fill out and submit to the court is a binding legal document so you want to be sure, YOU GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. Otherwise, it will cost you a lot and legal fees and court fees if you change your stance on the case halfway through the matter.
